In line with the industry, Flighty distinguishes between different lengths of airport stops when you spend 24 hours or less at an airport for a single trip. These are counted differently towards your stats. When the time spent at the airport is 24 hours or less, it can be a Connection, Layover, or a Roundtrip.

Roundtrips

Roundtrips are trips that depart from an airport, and return to the same airport within 24 hours (even if the return includes a stop).

They're counted as 2 airport visits in your stats.

Example: You travel from Barcelona to London Gatwick on the first flight of the day, spend the day in London and return from London Gatwick to Barcelona in the evening. Since you are going back to Barcelona within 24 hours, even if the return flight stops somewhere, your stats will reflect 2 visits to London Gatwick Airport.

Connections

A connection is two back-to-back flights through the same city. The ground time between the flights, which is the scheduled arrival of the first flight and the scheduled departure of the second flight, is between 0 and 8 hours.

Unless this is a Roundtrip (see above), this will count as 1 visit.

Example: You travel from Dublin to Tokyo via Doha. Your scheduled ground time in Doha is 3 hours and 30 minutes. In this case, your stats will reflect 1 visit to Doha Airport.

Note: If you arrive at one airport but depart from another, for example, you arrive in JFK, but must transfer to Newark for a connecting departure later that day, each airport will count as one visit.

Layover

A Layover is defined as a set of flights that arrive and depart from the same airport as part of a continuous journey, where the ground time is between 8 and 24 hours (and the flights are not part of a roundtrip).

In these cases, you might leave the airport, visit the city, or go to a hotel, and then return to the airport. This will count as 2 visits.

Example: You travel from London to New York via Paris CDG. Your scheduled ground time in Paris is 10 hours, so you decide to visit the Eiffel Tower. In this case, your stats will reflect 2 visits to Paris CDG Airport.
