How does Flighty predict flight delays?
When your aircraft is running late, Flighty uses machine learning based on thousands of similar flights to predict how long your delay might be.
To avoid confusion, we never replace the airline’s official times (even though our predictions are over 95% accurate and often arrive hours before the airline notifies you). Instead, Flighty shows both: our predicted times alongside the official ones, so you always see the full picture.
This feature works worldwide and only requires the aircraft’s tail number to be known.
What are the main reasons a flight is delayed?
Flighty is proud to be the first platform to tell you why most flights are delayed. We apply machine learning to aviation authority data and your incoming aircraft, which covers two out of every three flight delays in the USA.
Covered delay reasons:
Late arriving aircraft.
Airport ground stops and delays.
Weather events (thunderstorms, lightning, fog, low visibility, wind).
Closed runways.
Taxiway congestion.
Low ATC staffing.
Large-scale events (e.g., Superbowl, The Masters).
Any other Air Traffic Control (ATC) mandate.
Delay reasons not covered:
Plane maintenance issues.
Flight crew issues.
When a delay reason is available, it’s automatically included in your delay push alerts. If no reason is listed, it likely means either the region or delay type isn’t supported.
Most major regions and delay types are supported, especially airport-related delays. See below for specific coverage details.
