What do these aviation terms mean in Flighty?

Inbound Plane: When you take a flight, your plane comes from another flight right before yours, that is the inbound plane. Pro flyers watch that plane carefully, since if it's late... you have to wait for it and you will be late. Often times even if the airline has not delayed the flight yet.

Gate Departure: When the plane and the jetway gate disconnect. This is usually simultaneous with the airplane door closing. Hopefully, the plane pushes back from the gate shortly after, but sometimes captains will sit at the gate for a moment. This is still considered a gate departure since the jetway left the airplane.

Take Off: When the wheels lift off the ground. Not to be confused with "departure" — that’s the gate departure. This is why we never say "Departure" alone. We always say "Gate Departure".

Landing: When the plane’s wheels touch the ground. It’s not the same as arrival — see Gate Arrival.

Gate Arrival: Commonly called "arrival" but that's confusing since it could mean arrival at the airport. The official arrival always means at the gate. To avoid any confusion, we will always say "Gate Arrival" just to make sure.

Diverted: When a flight can’t land at its planned destination and is rerouted to a different airport — usually due to weather.

Recovery: The flight that takes passengers from the diversion airport to the original destination. Sometimes it’s the same plane, sometimes not. It can be hours later and from a different gate.

Long Haul: What counts as a “long haul flight” varies. Some airlines say 4,000 km, others 4,800 km. At Flighty, we define long haul as any flight over 3,940 km. That includes coast-to-coast U.S. flights like LAX to NYC.

HUD (Heads Up Display): Flighty’s Heads Up Display (HUD) displays your aircraft's location, altitude, speed, and whether it is climbing or descending. This is real-time data Flighty pulls directly from the position reports transmitted by your aircraft.
